Denise is constantly asked about the "stone", landscape, and sky fabrics that she uses in her quilts. There just isn't much commercial fabric with the unique depth and subtle complexity that many quilters are looking for to help "make" their projects. So in Denise's two-day fabric painting workshop participants create their own!
Resulting fabrics – cotton, silk, and/or linen – are created via the layered application of sun-reactive transparent Seta color paints, plus various resists, along with (while wet) the aggressive folding, twisting, wrapping, bunching or pleating of the fabric, and (while drying) the application of sand, different types of salt crystals, sugar, dirt, pattern cutouts, and the like – basically, doing or using most anything that can influence or cause differential paint absorption, diffusion, blending, patterning, or mottling.
Each participant leaves Denise's workshops (both Fabric Painting and Art Quilt Design Intensives) with a full collection of their own highly textured fabric in the colors and palettes that they themselves have chosen and painted.
